Biography

Léo Caillard (born 1985 in Paris, France) is a contemporary artist recognized for the exceptional quality of his marble sculptures. Perpetually in search of the rarest blocks, he is among the very few sculptors working at this level of technical mastery today.

This is where the truly unique character of his work lies: a constant dialogue between eras, the thread running through his artistic practice since his beginnings in the 2010s. Inspired by our relationship to time, to history, and to antiquity, he draws on classical Greco-Roman statuary, which he transforms, reshapes, and combines with concepts drawn from our own era.

Driven by notions of space and time, whether scientific or aesthetic, Léo Caillard brings a singular movement to his sculptures: they evolve, unfold, and subvert the nature of marble — a material traditionally associated with permanence and stillness.

He also brings a unique and distinctive dimension to his work through blockchain certification: alongside his handwritten signature, each piece is referenced and certified on the blockchain, guaranteeing its authenticity.

Recognized within the art world since 2017, the year he exhibited at a major event held in London, at King's College and the British Museum, he has since been present at numerous international art fairs and exhibitions. Since 2021, he has also been regularly commissioned for large-scale works.

The years ahead will see Léo Caillard's art reach its fullest expression, driven by an ever-growing inspiration, deeply rooted in the dialogue between antiquity and the present.

I don't work for the times. I work for whatever, within a piece, survives its times.
— Léo Caillard

In Their Words

Collectors, curators, and voices from the international art world

“Léo Caillard does something very few contemporary sculptors dare to do: he makes two thousand years of art history speak in a contemporary voice.”

Antoine Servier, curator, antique and contemporary art — Paris

“Every piece by Caillard seems to emerge from time itself, rather than from any particular era. That's rare, and it's exactly why I collect them.”

Isabella Conti, private collector — Milan

“I collect very little contemporary figurative work, but Caillard's marble pieces stopped me in a way nothing had in years.”

Richard T. Whitfield III, collector — New York, USA

“His sculptures don't try to modernize antiquity — they let antiquity speak in a language we recognize today.”

Elena Marsh-Duval, curator, modern and contemporary art — Los Angeles, USA

“Within the Mei Collection, Caillard's work is among the rare pieces of contemporary sculpture that bring Western and Asian collectors into agreement — which alone says a great deal about its strength.”

Mei-Lin Zhao, collector — Shanghai, China

“I hadn't seen a contemporary sculptor restore marble's dignity quite this way before. His work speaks with the past without imitating it — that's extremely rare.”

Khalid Al-Mansouri, collector — Dubai, United Arab Emirates

“Caillard's work sits at the exact intersection our foundation looks for: classical mastery, contemporary relevance, and genuine collectability. Very few living sculptors occupy that space credibly.”

Layla Haddad, director of a private art foundation — Doha, Qatar

“His sculptures let the classical and the contemporary stand side by side without conflict. That's not a matter of technique — it's a matter of attitude.”

Ji-woo Han, independent curator — Seoul, South Korea

“There's a stillness in his large-scale pieces that's almost architectural, and yet they never lose the intimacy of the hand that carved them.”

Daniel Okafor-Reyes, collector and art advisor — Miami, USA

“Seeing a Léo Caillard sculpture outdoors, at full scale, completely changes how you perceive his work.”

Sophie Lambert, artistic director, contemporary art fair — Paris

Liquid Stone

A body of work emblematic of Léo Caillard's practice, in which marble appears to stream as if caught in the wind — a semi-liquid state of stone. A two-fold exploration, balancing the classicism of figurative form with the abstraction born of movement. Opposing concepts meet here — solid and fluid, static and kinetic — lending the work a particular force. Several pieces from this series, most notably “Hercules Liquid,” have been produced at large scale for public art installations.

Wave Stone

A collection of works built around the principle of the wave, where once again we find the dialogue Léo Caillard consistently establishes between past and present. Classical busts are transformed by a sinuous or twisting wave — an allegory of our digital, fleeting age, where everything seems to dissolve into motion. As though the works were being drawn into the quantum realm, on the verge of vanishing from sight. A movement of remarkable elegance, seeming to make the stone dance — caught between the lightness of an airborne form and the sheer power of marble.

Architecture in Stone

A body of recent work by Léo Caillard, marked by a level of detail rarely matched in marble sculpture. Intricate architectural structures, drawn from antiquity, take shape within the very bodies of classical busts. The allegory of the Titan comes into play here, along with an inversion of proportion: the body becomes a shelter for architecture, rather than the reverse. A long and demanding process, where precision and refinement leave no room for error in the final stages of carving — work that has earned wide recognition in recent years, placing Léo Caillard at the forefront of contemporary sculptural technique.

Data Stone

Continuing the exploration begun with the Architecture series, Léo Caillard has more recently turned to sculpting graphic and electronic elements within the body of classical statues. In an age where data centers are everywhere, the mind's “cogito” enters into competition — or dialogue — with its digital counterpart: the printed circuit. A sculptural gesture suspended between two eras, carving the mark of our time into stone.

Hipsters in Stone

A series that stages classical busts fitted out with the emblems of contemporary urban culture — caps, headphones, sneakers — engaging directly with the pop and street-culture imagery of today. A playful, immediate collision of eras that has become one of Léo Caillard's most widely recognized bodies of work, exhibited internationally from gallery walls to airport terminals.

Heroes of Stone

The figures of today's great heroic sagas — Marvel, Star Wars, and many others — are, for the most part, directly inspired by ancient myth: Zeus and Superman, Hercules and Hulk, Athena and Wonder Woman. The same founding principles recur throughout: the paternal figure, the notion of empire, the weight of responsibility that comes with power. These modern heroes are, in truth, not so far removed from the ancient Spartan warrior — armor, helmet, and an often superhuman mission. Carved in marble, these contemporary figures naturally reclaim their place within the ancient pantheon, the beauty of the stone elevating their mainstream character and granting them a lasting place in history.

Anamorphosis

A series of sculptures in which form is compressed within space, giving the viewer the sensation of looking at a two-dimensional work. A striking effect, as complex to achieve as it is surprising in marble sculpture: volume only reveals itself as the viewer moves around the piece. Elegant and minimalist, these works draw the eye immediately, finding their place equally well indoors or, at larger scale, outdoors.

Diamond Stone

The relationship to time runs as a constant thread through Léo Caillard's work, and stone is its truest physical expression. Geological time — the Earth's long, slow time — is written into the veins of marble. “Eternal” time, meanwhile, resides in the diamond: an absolute material of near-limitless stability. Here, diamonds and zircons emerge from fissures carved by time into the marble. Objects of desire, the zircons remain indistinguishable from the rare genuine diamonds scattered across the sculpture. The unique, the eternal, and the beautiful are thus found within — nestled in the very fractures that compose it.

Polygonal Stone

An ongoing series exploring the boundary between abstraction and figuration. A formal, minimalist, and graphic exploration, in which the viewer can still recognize the shape of the classical bust, right at the edge of abstract form. A few facets less, and the work becomes a form without its own identity.

Large-Scale Sculpture & Exceptional Projects

It was in 2021 that his regular collaboration on monumental works began — a scale he holds a particular affection for. Building sculptures that engage with public space, architecture, and landscape has become a defining strand of his practice. The monumental has, throughout history, carried the reputation of great sculptors. From the colossi of Antiquity to Michelangelo, scale has always been a measure of ambition — and of the sculptor's command over material. The pages that follow present a selection of recent large-scale works. Léo Caillard is able to design, upon request, pieces conceived specifically for public or private outdoor settings, at monumental scale.

People often ask why I keep returning to antiquity. My answer is always the same: because that's where everything we still feel begins.
